Out With the Old Chip Wringer, In With the New

Chip Wringer or Metal Briquetter - Which is Best?

Using scrap metal machine equipment for metal recycling is a relatively easy way to get a return on your investment. When metal is machined it produces metal chips that are coated with liquid. These chips need to be "dried" prior to shipment for recycling. There are two main extraction methods for the removal of cooling liquids for recycling - wringing and briquetting.

Using a chip wringer is one of two coolant removal systems available, and has been the traditional method to dry metal chips prior to shipping for recycling. The chips are placed into a chip wringer, and much like a centrifuge, the chip wringer slings the liquid off of the chips. Our metal briquetting machines differ from a compact chip wringer, in that the chips get turned into dense briquettes (removing up to 99% of the liquid) that can be sold for a higher profit than loose chips that result from a chip wringer tool.

A metal briquetter is a tool similar to a chip wringer (also referred to as a chip extractor) in that it also squeezes the wet turnings, but instead of just drying the chips, it produces solid briquettes. These briquettes are more easily transported since they are more compact and require less handling. Most importantly, metal briquettes are more valuable, typically selling for a premium of 20%-50% over the "clean and dry" turnings price.

Chip Wringers / Centrifuge / Extractor
  • Wrings out and removes the cutting fluids (oil and/or water-based coolant) from chips after machining
  • Can remove up to 99% of the fluids
  • Cutting fluids can be filtered and reused
  • Chips can then be sold as "clean and dry" turnings
Metal Briquetter
  • Squeezes out and removes the cutting fluids (oil and/or water-based coolant) from chips after machining
  • Can remove up to 99% of the fluids
  • Cutting fluids can be filtered and reused
  • Turns metal chips, turnings, fillings, or even dust into valuable dense briquettes that yield a higher return than chips alone
